I was recently asked how to disable updating of virus/spyware definitions when running a command-line scan using Microsoft Security Essentials console tool MpCmdRun.exe. The option exists in the Microsoft Security Essentials user interface, but the setting is not obvious for some users.
The option Check for the latest virus & spyware definitions before running a scheduled scan exists in the Settings tab of Microsoft Security Essentials. One may think that this option applies only to scheduled scans. In fact the setting applies to command-line scan (scheduled scan uses the MSE console tool, as well) using MpCmdRun.exe.

To disable updating of signatures/definitions when running the console tool, uncheck the Check for the latest virus & spyware definitions before running a scheduled scan option in the Settings tab.

Editor’s note: You may simply uncheck the above option if you’re sure that MSE is already updated, or if you plan to follow a different time schedule to update the definitions either using the user interface or using the command-line or scheduled task using MpCmdRun.exe.
