Ever wanted to create PDF files but don’t have a PDF writer application installed in your system? Microsoft has released a free Office 2007 Add-In named "Save as PDF or XPS Add-In" that allows you save files in PDF or XPS format from Office 2007 applications.

Download Office 2007 Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS

This download works with the following Office programs:

  • Access 2007
  • Excel 2007
  • InfoPath 2007
  • OneNote 2007
  • PowerPoint 2007
  • Publisher 2007
  • Visio 2007
  • Word 2007

After installing the Add-In, the PDF or XPS option gets added to the Save As menu in Office 2007 applications.

Earlier Versions of Microsoft Office

This Add-In is supported only in Office 2007. If you have an earlier version of Office (2003 or earlier), you need a third-party converter to create PDFs from Windows applications.

CutePDF Writer installs itself as a "printer subsystem". This enables virtually any Windows applications (must be able to print) to create professional quality PDF documents.

    Hi

I have a problem with this feature as follows:
When opening larger (about greater than 0.5mb) .pdf files created in MS Office 2007 products using the MS Office “save as pdf” add-in, then the files do not want to open, and cause my laptop to hang. With smaller files this is not a problem. I can open other large pdf files no problem.

The problem seems to be Windows XP Professional.

I have repeated the process on 2 other machines. On the Windows Vista machine it works well. On the Windows XP machine I have the same problem.

Both machines running XP Professional have the latest updates.

    Please help if you can.

The add-in works fine to create a PDF, but if you have important information in the Office file’s property fields BE WARNED: properties are copied into different fields under the PDF tag in the new PDF file. The regular properties fields under the Summary tag are left blank. This happens even if you choose to copy the properties under the Options button of Save as PDF.
In our case I’m going to have to write a field-copier for all the chapter names, index terms, etc. in a couple of hundred docs that need to go into our document indexing program.
I don’t know who to “thank” for this fubar, MS or Adobe.
