If you use Outlook Express as the default mailer, you can create a desktop shortcut to launch the New Message window directly, without opening the main window of Outlook Express.
1. Right-click on the Desktop and click New, Shortcut
2. Type the following command and click Next
3. Assign a name for the shortcut ("Compose Mail") and click Finish

Assign a Hotkey (optional)
4. Right-click on the shortcut and click Properties
5. Type a shortcut key combination (say, CTRL+SHIFT+N) in the Shortcut key text box.
6. Click OK.
To launch the New Message window, simply double-click the Desktop shortcut, or use the hotkey you assigned.
There is another way you can open the New Message window directly. This is using the mailto: protocol command. For example, to send mail to someone@somedomain.com, type mailto:someone@somedomain.com in the Start-Run dialog.
