The My Documents folder is displayed in the top level of the navigation pane in Windows XP. In Windows Vista, the Documents folder does not show up by default in the navigation pane. If you like the Windows XP design and want to add Documents namespace to the navigation pane in Windows Vista, here is how to do so.

Editor’s note: The Favorite Links area in the left pane in Windows Explorer contains the Documents link by default. Those who prefer and use the Favorite Links, don’t need this tweak.

Add Documents Namespace to the Navigation Pane

1. Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press ENTER.

2. Go to the following branch:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} \ ShellFolder

3. Double-click Attributes and set its value data as f080013d (hexadecimal)

4. Exit the Registry Editor.

5. Logoff and Login back for the change to take effect.

(or) Restart the Explorer shell using the hidden Exit Explorer GUI.

Registry Fix

To automate the above, download documents-nav.zip. Unzip and run the file documents-nav.reg. To reverse the changes, run the file undo.reg.
