Fix for Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 Install Problems With Norton Product Installed

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1, you may experience the following problems:

  • Device Manager is empty
  • Missing Wireless network adaptors or other hardware devices
  • Unable to connect using a wireless adapter

When you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a tool that is called Fixccs.exe adds numerous registry keys in many locations but is unable to remove them, if you have a Norton 2008 product in your computer. Symantec has released an update (available via LiveUpdate) that can prevent this problem from occuring. For more information, see FAQ Upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 with your Norton 2008 product installed.

Note: If you’ve already upgraded to XP Service Pack 3 or Vista Service Pack 1 and facing the above problems, download and run the SymRegFix.exe fix from the Symantec link mentioned earlier.

Remove Hibernation File Cleaner From Vista Disk Cleanup Options

Hibernate feature gets disabled if you select the Hibernation File Cleaner in Windows Vista Disk Cleanup tool. (REF KB928897.) To prevent accidental deletion of the hibernation file from any admin level user account in your system, you may remove the entry Hibernation File Cleaner from the Disk Cleanup options.

How to Add the UK English Spell Check Option in Windows Live Mail

Reset the Registry and the File Permissions in Windows XP

You may need to reset the registry and file permissions if you experience Access is denied error when installing a Windows XP Service Pack or update. (Example: Service Pack 3 setup error. Access is denied.)

Hint: If you’re seeing the error Service Pack 3 setup error. Access is denied when installing Windows XP Service Pack 3, to verify if the error is caused by incorrect registry permissions, open the file C:\Windows\Svcpack.log using Notepad and look for the text Access is denied or DoRegistryUpdates failed.

Note: Access denied errors can also be caused by third-party applications, especially anti-virus or anti-spyware applications. So, make sure that you close all the anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities temporarily and then install the Service Pack. This helps in most cases. You should reset the registry and the file permissions only if necessary. (more…)
