Installation of Windows Sidebar Gadgets Is Managed by Your System Administrator

When you try to install a third-party gadget to the Windows Vista Sidebar, the following message may be displayed:

Installation of Windows Sidebar gadgets is managed by your system administrator.

The above error occurs if you’re trying to add a gadget which is not digitally signed and a Policy setting in your system prevents installation of unsigned gadgets. Note that Windows Vista by default allows installation of signed and unsigned gadgets. (more…)

How to Fix a Corrupted Recycle Bin in Windows Vista

There are situations where you need to reset the Recycle Bin store folder to fix problems such as Recycle Bin not showing the files that have been deleted, or you’re unable to completely empty the Recycle Bin. Each drive has a hidden and protected folder named $Recycle.bin, which is where the Recycle Bin stores files and folders that you (and other users in the PC) delete. Windows Vista creates a fresh $Recycle.bin folder automatically after you reset it. (more…)

Restore the Restart Prompt in the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig)

Question: When I was disabling some of the startup applications using MSCONFIG, I was asked if I want to restart the system. I hit the checkbox and now it never reminds me to restart if I change something in the Startup. How do I bring that restart prompt back? I’m using Windows Vista.

The System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) in Windows Vista shows the following prompt if you modify the system settings using the utility. If you accidentally enabled the Don’t show this message again option when closing the System Configuration Utility, you’ll need to delete a registry value to restore the prompt back. (more…)

Restore the Confirmation Prompt When Opening Multiple Mail Messages in Windows Mail and OE

When you select more than 10 messages and press ENTER to open them simultaneously in Windows Mail or Outlook Express, you’ll be prompted with the following message:

Opening all selected messages could take a few minutes.
Select OK to continue.

Clicking OK will open the selected mails at a time. If you choose the Don’t show me this again option, the preference is saved in the registy and there is no GUI option to reverse the setting. Here is how to restore the confirmation prompt if you’ve accidentally disabled it. (more…)

Deleted Files Are Shown When Performing a Search in Windows Vista

When you perform a search in Windows Vista, files that were deleted earlier may show up in Search results. This is because the Indexing Service needs some time to update its records. The time frame may vary from one system to the other. In case search still continues to show deleted files, or if it does not show files that exist in the system, the indexing service may be out of date, and you may have to rebuild the search index to fix the problem. Fix for System Restore Error 0×8007007B in Windows Vista

When you start the System Restore utility in Windows Vista, the following error message may be displayed:

There was an unexpected error:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
(0×8007007B)

System Restore will now close.

The same error might occur when running Windows CompletePC Backup. (more…)
