Fix the ANI and CUR file types.

.ANI and .CUR files displayed with generic icons after uninstalling a third-party graphics viewer?

Symptoms

When you a folder containing .AVI / .CUR (cursor files), they may be displayed with a generic icon, which is the icon used for unknown file types. This may have happened after uninstalling a third-party graphics viewer.

Resolution

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the following locations one by one:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ anifile \ DefaultIcon

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ curfile \ DefaultIcon

In the right-pane, double-click (default) and type %1 as its data
Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ .ani

Set the (default) value to anifile
Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ .cur

Set the (default) value to curfile
Close Regedit.exe

Automate

Alternately, you can resolve the problem by downloading the REG file available at the bottom of this page. Save the REG file to Desktop, right-click and then choose Merge.
