How to restore the missing "Security Center" service in Windows XP SP2?
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 provides a new feature, Windows Security Center, to help you protect your computer. Security Center notifies you about the status of your anti-virus and firewall software, and the Automatic Update settings in your system.
There are malware and viruses which disable the Windows Security Center, and deletes the service altogether. This article provides a .REG file which helps you restore the missing Security Center service (for Windows XP SP2) which can be used in the aftermath of a Malware removal. Please see the Attachments section at the bottom of this article to download the REG file.

try booting into safe mode. (f6 during the boot up)
then right click on reg file and choose "merge"

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU - this problem has plagued me for MONTHS. Although I ran the .reg file, it only worked after going into safe mode and choosing merge. Thanks, Coleen for the tip!!

Your fix didn't help becuase my machine got the downloader.zlob.bov trogen. This deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\winmgmt from the registry. I exported from another system, and merged it. Then I had to clean up some dll registrer and the mop registrers. But your help lead me in the right direction. Thanks

Excellent: Thank you. The wscsvc.reg restored my Security center. It's nice to find someone who has a good fix.
