Register Windows Live Hotmail with the Default Programs tool in Windows Vista
Summary
By default, Windows Live Hotmail is not registered with the Default Programs tool in Windows Vista. As a result, you may not be able to set Hotmail as the default mailer for your system. Utility discussed in this page helps you register Windows Live Hotmail with the Default Programs tool in Windows Vista.
Registering Hotmail with the Default Programs tool
- Download registerhm.zip and save it to Desktop
- Unzip, extract the files (registerhotmail.exe and readme.txt) to folder
- Double-click registerhotmail.exe to run it
- Click Register Windows Live Hotmail with Default Programs
- Optionally, click Set Windows Live Hotmail as the default (current user)
Windows Live Hotmail should now be available in the Default Programs listing.

Thanks a ton.

didn't work for me either. I have XP. I've been trying to fix fatal error for a long time. Won't let me sign in to passport when the box pops up.

Can you remove the OS check or update it to allow installation on Windows Server 2008? (this is just Vista server)
Thanks!

Oh my god! Thank you SO much for this. It took me 8 hours to find this fix. I just got a new cmptr and it seems I spend 90% of my time trying to figure out Vista. Why did they not have Hotmail included in the first place? Isn't MSN kind of an affiliate?

Well, it doesn't work as I expected.... When I clik on a "mailto" link, it does take me to Windows Live Mail, but at the "welcome" page instead of the "compose a new message" page and putting the email adress.... I still have to click on "new" and then copy-paste the email there....
In fact, the only thing it does, it's to make a link to go to my hotmail account welcome page.
Unless there's a way to change that too!

This is an improvement, in that at least when I click an email link, it goes to windows live hotmail instead of an email program I can't use. However, even if logged into hot mail, I have to manually start a new email and paste everything in, the same as before.

I've downloaded and run registerhm as instructed. Now when I activate a 'mailto' I get an error message from Windows Live ID: "Your request cannot serviced. Technical problems with Windows Live ID, try again later" (this is a translation from Danish!)
Same error two hours later. Any ideas?
Does registerhm work with Vista SP1?
Why can't I see Windows Live Hotmail under 'Default programs'?
