PNG images are not displayed on Web sites in Internet Explorer

- Internet Explorer 7
Symptom
When you open a Web page, the .PNG images in that page may not be displayed. Instead, a red X, or a placeholder, may appear in place of the images. However, all other image file types may display correctly in Internet Explorer.

Resolution
This problem may be seen after installing a third-party application, which may have altered the file class and MIME settings for the PNG file type. To resolve the problem, use these steps:
- Download PNG_Fix.zip and save it to the Desktop.
- Unzip and extract the two files (pngasso_xp.reg and pngasso_vista.reg) to the Desktop.
- If you're using Windows XP, right-click pngasso_xp.reg and choose Merge. If you're using Windows Vista, right-click pngasso_vista.reg and choose Merge. Click Yes to confirm the merge operation. Additionally, in Windows Vista, you'll have to click Continue when you see the User Account Control elevation dialog.
Note: The .REG files above should fix the file association and MIME settings for .PNG file types. File paths in the .REG files are hardcoded for C:\. If you have installed Windows in a different location than C:\, you'll need to edit the REG file(s) using Notepad and update the drive-letter and/or the Path accordingly.

Hey, thanks for the fix. However, I get an error while trying to merge the registry files in Vista. Registry editor complains that some keys are used by the system or other processes.
I tried to boot into safe mode and it didn't work. Killing explorer.exe didn't work either. Any ideas how to merge the registry file? Thanks.

I fix the problem!!!!!!!!
One day, My IE7 started to dont loading PNG images with no reason.
Months before this problem, I have installed a Codec Pack to see movies, "K-Lite" in my case (this Codec was not the reason of the problem, but yes the fix it)
I just reinstall my codec pack (without uninstall it first) and the IE problem has been fixed.
So to fix it just reinstall your codec pack and if you dont have anyone then download someone, http://www.codecguide.com/

Great! MANY thanks! I also had the merge error, but most importantly, despite that it fixed the missing icons in Vista's "Help and Support" than other PNG & XML fixes hadn't resolved [and was REALLY hacking me off!]
No idea what upset PNG's... I think the Vista reg is a bit flaky...
Now, if you could only tell us how to set e.g. Photoshop as the JPEG editor without loosing the Preview capability...

The registry fix can be imported without problems bypassing Vista security restrictions with a boot from BartPe; but in my case this didn't fixed the problem. I verified the registry settings after this ad all matched with the fix. Any suggestion?

I had the same issue trying to use the .reg file so i went through the .reg file manually and verified its contents against my registry. They are identical but the problem still exists... Any other ideas?

Unfortunately, this fix doesn't work for me. My Windows XP is installed in C:WINNT so I edited the XP reg file to replace C:\WINDOWS\system32 with C:\WINNT\system32 before running it, but still I can't view PNG files in IE7. All other supported image formats are fine. I'm having to view this page in Firefox since the verification graphic is a PNG and of course, IE won't display it! Any other ideas to make PNGs visible in IE?

I have that problem of "keys are being used by system" (Vista).
Seems to be a common problem. With a different user profile the png's are fine. HELP !!

The "Keys are being used by system" error comes from unusual permissions in the registry. I broke the fix file up into 20 individual reg files & tried merging each, & found about 5 that would not merge. The corresponding 5 entries in my registry were "owned" by a "Trustedinstall" account. Changing ownership to administrators & allowing the user & administrators to have full access allowed the reg file to be merged. It unfortunately has not fixed my Vista IE7 .png file display problem. *sigh*.
Remember opening IE7 as administrator is at least a temp way around it, but a tad unsecure.

I remember getting the "keys being used by system" error message some months ago. I tried reexecuting the pngasso_vista.reg file after extracting it from the zip file. It finally worked. I got the error message but the problem got fixed. The conclusion - try executing the file again and try extracting it from the winzip file into a folder before running it. Hope this works for someone. Please don't ask me why it works this way. I don't care. It does not have to be logical. All it has to do is work.

Great, I had the ".png-proplem" and dindt find a solution anyway. Most said, "install new...." and other stupid things. With this fine working little "PNG_Fix.zip"-File I can see all my .png-graphics again in the Internet Explorer.
Thanks
