Symptoms
When you open Help and Support center in Windows Vista, one of the following problems may occur:
- Red X mark appears where the images are to be displayed
- CSS styles are not applied to the pages in Help and Support
- Error Internet Explorer cannot download / from Help occurs:
Resolution
This happens if the Content Type registry setting for certain file types is missing or incorrect. To fix the problem download helpcontentfix_vista.reg from the Attachments section of this article and save it to Desktop. Right-click on the downloaded file and choose Merge. The REG file fixes the Content Type values for XML/XSL/PNG/JPG/CSS file types, and thereby resolves the problem.

Thanks for the fix. I only needed it because I was sent a .png file and had to associate it with a program to open it!

The merge didn't work (for some unknown reason) but I manually entered the details in the reg file via regedit and it has worked . I also noticed that itunes had taken the jpg format and as I don't use itunes I have nutralised the reference. So thanks very helpful

instead fixing this issue you should learn the cause: you have this issue because you used a registry cleaner that destroyed your Windows. DON'T USE REGISTRY CLEANERS!

Worked great!! Problems solved!
However, I didn't have to "Right-click on the downloaded file and choose Merge." There was never an opportunity to do so. The fix just ran and completed after I clicked through a few permission pop-ups.

Well, It does not work for me : if I choose "merge" it just opens the text file (it does the same when choosing modify), but nothing has changed after all... Why does it not merge ? Help !

Tried right click, merge. Also tried regedit filename in cmd prompt and received this same error with both:
Cannot import helpcontentfix_vista.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes. Still have my red x's.

I tried the solutions of ramesh Srinivasan's. It didn't work. Changed the content image to image/pny and tried the reg fix file. No help
What else is here to do?
I got into this problem after trying the systemsuite registry cleanup I think:)

I tried : fixhelp.reg

Eureka - I followed your advice and downloaded the helpcontentfix_vista.reg and it solved the problem of the red x. I contacted both Microsoft Vista and Vista magazine some time ago about this and still haven't received a reply. Thank you.

Worked for me, but I still was missing some misc images. I noticed the reg file was missing .gif which also was missing the Content Type and PerceivedType values. I added the following and those too were fixed (see below).
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif]
"Content Type"="image/gif"
"PerceivedType"="image"

Thanks for the fix - problem solved. A word to the wise, it took me less than 10 minutes to find this solution. If it takes you days you are not using the right search terms. Keep it simple, direct and accurate. It works!

For me the job did cleaning of IE cache (through Internet Explorer settings). There was smth wrong in the cache - Fiddler showed, how Help was requesting the microsoft servers and what it got back.
