Unable to open .PPS attachments directly from Windows Mail in Windows Vista
- Copyright © 2008 Ramesh Srinivasan
- Error messages , Windows Mail
Symptom
When you open a .PPS file that came as a mail attachment in Windows Mail, you may see the Open / Cancel dialog box. When you select Open, the following error may be displayed:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.
This may happen even though you have PowerPoint Viewer 2003 or 2007 installed. However, the same file may open correctly when saved to disk, and then viewed. Note that this problem does not occur if you have Microsoft Office or PowerPoint installed.
Cause
This happens if the Open command is missing for .PPS and/or .PPT file types.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, follow these steps:
For .PPS files (Microsoft PowerPoint Slideshow)
- Click Start, type regedit.exe and press ENTER
- Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11\shell\Show
- Right-click Show and click Rename
- Type the word Open so that Show is replaced by Open command
- If you have PowerPoint Viewer 2007 installed, repeat the above steps in this key, as well:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.12\shell\Show
- After changing Show to Open, close Registry Editor window.
For .PPT files (Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation)
- Click Start, type regedit.exe and press ENTER
- Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.Show.11\shell\Show
- Right-click Show and click Rename
- Type the word Open so that Show is replaced by Open command
- If you have PowerPoint Viewer 2007 installed, repeat the above steps in this key, as well:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.Show.12\shell\Show
- After changing Show to Open, close Registry Editor window.

I can't believe that after days and days of trying to make this work, your article helped me do it. I had been trying for days....Your directions were easy to use, even for someone that is learning as I go along. Windows Vista is a challenge but after this I will keep trying. Now if I could only make the mail work....

Thank you for helping me out. I've been trying to solve this problem for several days.
I would have thought Microsoft Knowledge Base would have been a help, but once again I was disappointed with the MS support.
Appreciate your help.

I found that changing "Show" to "Open" fixed the problem in "Windows Mail"but then caused a problem opening these files from Explorer. My solution was to duplicate the full "Show" key as "Open" in each instance and this worked fine.

My heartfelt thanks. I had been having this trouble with Outlook Express (which I solved by saving the .pps attachments on my hard disk, then opening outside OE) for the last 2 years. With Windows Mail / WLM there is no "Save" option in the dialog box, so I was forced to look for your solution. Thank you again

Hi Ramesh
Thank you so much for this. Worked perfectly. If this is a known fix for the issue why did Powerpoint Viewer 2007 SP1 not include a fix for this.

I got my first computer a couple months ago and it has vista on it. It was nice to finally find a solution to something online that actually worked the first time and the directions were easy. I wish all the glitches were this easy.
