How to hide the "Delete" command from Recycle Bin context menu in Windows Vista
Summary
In article 141, we saw how to restore the Recycle Bin icon to the Desktop in Windows Vista. This article tells you how to hide the Delete command from the Context Menu of the Recycle Bin, and replace it with Search... command. This is a counter-measure to prevent accidental deletion of the Recycle bin icon from the Desktop in Windows Vista.
More information
The Delete command from the Recycle Bin context menu in Windows Vista cannot be removed, but can be hidden by using a tweak. To hide the Delete command and replace it with a Search... command, use these steps:
- Download the file Vista_recyclebin_hidedelete.reg (from the Attachments section below)
- Save the file to your Desktop
- Right-click on the file and choose Merge
- If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
- Click Yes to continue
- After applying the REG file, the Recycle bin context menu will appear as in Fig 1 below:

(Fig 1)
How to undo the above tweak?
To undo the above tweak, and to show the Delete option (default setting), download and apply the Vista_recyclebin_showdelete.reg file. After applying the undo REG file, the Delete option should be restored, as in the figure below.

Most informative, saves a lot of time having to 'google' for the right answer out of all those thousands you end up with....

My operating system is Windows Vista and I accidentally deleted the recycle bin and but soon after restored it. But since restoring it, my recycle bin does not properly show its "full or empty" state?? Any tips, hints, suggestions are appreciated!

Once again, what a clever, simple, workaround for a Vista Recycle Bin issue! Getting rid of "delete" (or restoring it) here, is a "must-have" for Vista users. Thanks Ramesh!

Thank you, Ramesh; I just didn't want to delete the Recycle Bin on my Desktop or hide it. I just like to get rid of the "Delete" command in the Recycle Bin context menu. This advice worked perfectly for me. Thank you!

Thank you Ramesh! Too bad MS didn't clearly think out the placement of "Delete". What a nusance constantly restoring the Recycle bin!

That's useful... I guess the "Delete" command from Recycle Bin context menu is already gone in Windows 7. I've already done this on my computer that is Windows Vista.

I think I'd vote this the most useful tweak for Vista - I've lost count of the annoying times I've deleted my recycle bin.

Amazing!!! I lost my recycle bin and the advise I found in here found it!!!
The remove delete reg change was fast easy and best of all..IT WORKED.
Finally some where to get accurate info about issues Microsoft should be addressing.

Add me to the chorus of happy readers. Following an accidental deletion I needed all three related tutorials on this site (restore the bin; fix its stuckness; remove the "Delete" context menu option). Such clearly written and complete instruction by an outstanding teacher.
