Hello !
Sorry for my bad english !
You cannot modify this branch : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\shell
The service TrustedInstaller is the owner of the Shell key.
Have you an another suggestion ?

I can't get the fix for LNK to work. It's telling me that some keys are open by the system or other processes. Any way I can run it without opening these processes, because I have already tried closing all programs.

I've found that after installing Visual Studio 2005 the association for the .sln file doesn't work. I've had to manually change it to run 'devenv.exe'. Don't know if that's the correct solution or not.

Thank you so much for this website, your registry script saved me from having to re-install Vista. I had somehow corrupted the EXE file association and NONE of my programs would run. I'm all good now thanks to you. :D

While it doesn't fix my problem, it sure sounds like one to keep in my favorites. My problem: I found the program to modifiy file associations on Vista, but it won't let me associate a file who's extension is not already known to the program. Any of you know how to fix that?
Thanks.

Although the fixes worked for jpg and jpeg files, the fix for gif merely opens the entire windows photo gallery instead of opening the particular gif. I checked the actual registry entries and they seem the same but work differently.

Ramesh, good that I found you in the Microsoft Windows Support Community posting. You are a real great EXPERT!!! After 3 weeks looking by myself in the WWW, I didn't find any solution. 3 weeks ago , suddenly - and belief me - I have done NOTHING, Vista was from one second to the other unable to creatre new folders in the shell. Good that I know some old MS-DOS function and could create a workarround. Now merged the "Folder Fix" and as fast the issue appears, it disappears without booting the system. Ramesh, I can't express myself how you had helped me. Thx a lot. TS from Germany.

I was having a problem that when I selected more than one jpg from Windows Explorer on my laptop, it would open several instances of my photo editing software. with this fix, it set my files association back to windows picture viewer and I was able to reset it to Paintshop pro. Now it opens all the files up in one instance of PSP. Thank you for a great fix.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
My son called me crying claiming that i couldn't run no programs at all on his Vista computer. This phenomenon appeared after he uninstalled 7-zip. After digging around the net I found this exe-fix. That solved the problem and it solved his total dispair and my frustration not be able to help him.
Me myself runs XP and refuses to use Vista...
Again, many thanks.

Thanks,
I used the lnk fix, and it worked great.
I had copied a shortcut file from an XP to Vista and could not open it.
When asked which program to use, I chose Explorer.exe and forgot
to uncheck the 'always use this program to open this type of file'.
Not only would Explorer not open the file, but it renamed every shortcut file on my Vista system to .lnk (for example... SystemMechanic.exe.lnk) and nothing would work to fix it... except your fix.
You have saved me from buying a new Vista DVD because I have lost my old one.
Thanks again.

In regards to Quicktime .mov thumbnails this website did mysteriosly help. I did install K-lite software on Vista and checked every thumbnail type option while installing. Cleaned or cleared the thumbnail cache. Ran the .avi fix that is posted here, and then rebooted the machine. When I did log in to view my videos .mov thumbnails was showing.
You might need to associate .mov with any other program and open it with it and then go back to Quicktime or K-lite association.

The zip file association fix, zipfix_vista.reg, worked great; however, it only worked when right-click merged in the administrator account, and to get the yellow folders with the zippers back, you have to go Start > Goto All Programs > Expand the Accessories Folder > Right Click Command Prompt > Select Run as Administrator >
Windows Vista will ask you if you were sure that you wanted to open the command prompt as an administrator, say yes. Now from there type:
cmd /c assoc .zip=CompressedFolder .

I am not that knowlegable about working with the registry. You say "Use right-click - Save as option in your browser to download the fixes". When I right-click I do not get a Save as option. Also do I merge the whole file or a part of it.
What I want is to get back the "Extract all files" in Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer

but now...

Thanks for the fix.
Just in case anyone had my problem:
I wasn't able to merge files, as the file association problem was stopping me running that option, and i couldn't choose "run as administrator" to override it.
To fix in this kind of situation, simply open regedit and import the reg file!
Thanks again!!

The .zip association fix file above saves itself as a .txt file when I right click (the browser I'm using is Google Chrome..does that have anything to do with it??) The instructions mention that it's supposed to be a .reg file that I just have to right click and select Merge. Instead it opens as a text file. Sorry I think I'm missing a step here ...anyone know???
