How to hide Favorite links in Explorer and browse dialog boxes
Summary
In Windows Vista, folders and the open / save as dialogs contain the Favorite links in the left pane (navigation pane). The Favorite links in section makes it easy to change to a common folder or start a search that you previously saved. This is similar to the Places bar feature in pre-Vista systems.
This article tells how to hide the Favorite links folder in Explorer, and in the Open/Save as dialog boxes.
Hiding the Favorite links
To hide the Favorite links, hover the mouse pointer to the top border of the Folders pane. When the resize cursor (double-headed arrows) appears, drag the handle higher and cover the Favorite links area. Note the resize cursor in fig 1 below.

(Fig 1) (Fig 2)
The Favorite links area is now hidden. Use the same steps for Open and Save As dialog boxes separately.

Thank you for this. It annoys me I have to waste 15 minutes searching on web how to do this. Microsoft's so called user friendly features are actually just making our lives worse.

I was looking for a way to see "Computer" to go directly to various folders without first scrolling down to "Folders".
Very helpful, thanks

Thank you so much! Vista UI has been so annoying to me.
Do you know how to enable the "up" button into explorer?
Thanks so much!
